Carwin talks injury and return

“The first thing, and this is something I’ve shared with my wife and family, is my love for the sport. This is what I love to do, and it’s something I’m very passionate about. I’m chasing my dream. I’ll see my surgeon, and I think it’s 100 percent, most likely, that I’ll be cleared. What’s going on right now is the nerves in my legs are regenerating from the surgery I had in my mid-back. It was the T-10 through T-11. A bulging disc, ruptured disc, compressed spinal cord. It’s tough to come back from, but I’m excited, and the surgeon has been very positive. One of my concerns is, how is this gonna affect me when I’m 65? Am I still gonna be able to be healthy and move around? He said, with 100 percent assurance, that I’ll be fine. If the doctor said it was a definite risk to my health, yeah, I have a family. I have two kids. I have a loving wife at home, and that’s the most important thing to me is my family.”

Daniel Cormier calls out Shane Carwin fight as he returns

“I think if there is a plus one and Zuffa’s going to send someone over it is going to have to be someone that is very good you know? Maybe Carwin, as he’s coming back. He’s a guy with a lot of name value and I don’t necessarily know if that’s a step up (from Josh Barnett) but that is somebody with name value. Or, if one of the guys loses from the card this weekend. But then it really limits because if Frank Mir loses I’m pretty sure he is not going to want to come to Strikeforce to fight me where if he loses he has everything to lose. When Cain beats Bigfoot Silva, what are they going to do, send him (Silva) back to Strikeforce to fight me again? Nothing really adds up right now, I don’t know, I don’t know how to guess what they are going to do. There just is not that many step ups out there better than Josh Barnett. Especially that Josh Barnett. That Josh Barnett was 248 pounds, was in shape, was going hard, we had every intention on getting it down Saturday night, but that dude Saturday night came to fight. There are not too many guys that are a step up from that Josh Barnett that showed up on Saturday.”

Lesnar: "I can take a punch, I've yet to be knocked out"

“I think it’s a bunch of bulls. The fights that I’ve gotten hit, I’ve stood and banged with Heath Herring, Randy Couture, Frank Mir... I’ve taken a lot of shots. I mean, Shane Carwin. And I’ve yet to be knocked out. I had refs stop a fight for a submission and a TKO, which is a referee stoppage. I’ve never been knocked out cold… Any time you’re on top, whatever it is, and I don’t care if it’s the business world or it’s in farming or fighting  and those are all things that I’m in there’s people out to get you. There’s criticism. I don’t know if it’s just that people don’t like to see other people succeed, or just if they want to see them fail.”

Update on Shane Carwin's back injury

Shane had the surgery and connected a tv program via phone, updated his fans of what's going on about his injury.

"Right now, I'm doing alright. We gotta get up early. I gotta get up at about 3:30 in the morning to head down there to go have surgery. But, it's T-10 through T-12. It's basically the middle of my back. I've got a disc that's pressing into my spinal cord. They've basically removed all the spinal fluid around the area. The first time something really bad happened, I was doing a seminar, just drilling takedowns and I got taken down. Both my legs froze up and I actually thought I was paralyzed. It lasted 10 to 15 seconds. I wasn't able to move them or anything. Finally, I was able to recover after the initial impact to my spinal cord. When I started jumping and stuff, I had a tremendous amount of pain in my legs. What they're gonna do is they're gonna actually drill out the bone in my spine to give my spinal cord some room in there.

I think I'm looking at about 10 weeks of down time. It's similar to the neck injury that I've had. I actually had bones that were growing around my spinal cord. They went in there and removed that. This is the same time of procedure. This is the third time that my back's been operated on.... I love to fight and I'm passionate about it. Any time you're passionate about something and you love to do it, it makes it easy to go to work. That's what I love to do. The doctor told me I can either have this surgery and be able to train and do all the things that I need to do to be a complete athlete or we could forego the surgery and I could quit. But I'd probably be looking at surgery down the road anyway."

Shane Carwin thinks Cain Velasquez will get his belt again.

"I know we are about to call the Cain hype train derailed. I want to remind you guys how young and talented he is. Junior hits hard and is accurate. This should not be a surprise to any of you. Cain is a young talented fighter and if you want to see the qualities of a UFC Champion you have to look no farther then Cain. Everyone loses it is what they do with that loss that defines them. I am certain that Cain will be a Champion again."

Shane Carwin talking about retirement rumors

He is obviously not happy with the rumors. His expected return to octagon is set for 2012 summer.

"I got a surprise call today saying that a rumor is floating around about me retiring. I guess some people must be wishful thinking. For me the choice to have a surgery was easy. My Doc did not tell me surgery was the 'only' option for a normal life. He said to keep fighting surgery is the only thing that will stop my body from locking up. I could probably even continue fighting and risk it happening in a fight or while training. What my team and I decided was that I have no interest in just 'Fighting and crossing' I want to be a champion. The UFC Heavyweight Champion to be specific. So I am going to have this surgery and be back better than ever. I have a lot to accomplish and I intend on punishing everyone they put in front of me. To beat the best you have to be able to train like the best. So surgery will allow me do that. I may be an older fighter but I have less cage time then most if not all of the Athletes in the UFC. I have accomplished a lot in a very short amount of time. I have a lot more to accomplish. I will be back to the guy that is big and hits you so hard Joe Rogan gets a headache. I am going to knock people out and finish fights. The UFC is going to have to get special financing just to cover the KO and FoN bonuses they are going to have to dish out to me."

Some bad news from Shane Carwin.

Yesterday Shane Carwin posted this on his website about his injury and another surgery. You may remember that he suffered from the same injury after Lesnar fight, and took him a while after his first surgery to recover. Carwin later faced Junior Dos Santos which he lost with a unanimous decision.

"As a man of faith I know that you are never given more burden then you can carry. I feel that the last couple years have tested me in more ways then I have ever imagined. The challenges the being close to greatness and yet so far away has been nothing less then motivating.

I have spent my entire fighting career dealing with injuries from my football career. I have done my best to get through my training and I have been blessed to get through my fights with relatively little to no damage. As I ramped up my training for UFC 141 my body locked up during training. It wasn’t like the Lesnar fight but my back just tightened up and I froze. I scheduled an MRI and the results showed that my disc in my lower back is into the nerves . My doctor gave me two options; retire and I could probably go on for a few years without surgery or I could undergo surgery and continue my career. The decision was easy. I have unfinished business. The UFC had me lined up to face one of the best in the world and I am confident I have everything I need to be a Champion. I am scheduling surgery and I hope to return to the Octagon by spring or summer 2012.I will be in Las Vegas for Halloween weekend for a UFC 137 viewing party. I look forward to a fast and speedy recovery. Thanks to my sponsors and fans for all of your continued support."
